Tips for Ridding Roaches from Oklahoma City Homes
December 23, 2019
As the weather gets colder, cockroaches are on the hunt for warm shelter. And your Oklahoma City residence might provide the perfect place for them to stay. There are different types of cockroaches, and they can all cause harm to you and your family. They can get in through the smallest crack and crevice, so knowing how to protect and secure your home is an absolute must this winter season.
Types of Cockroaches
There are four types of cockroaches that could try to enter your home this winter: American, German, Oriental, and Asian. Each of these looks different. Knowing how to distinguish between them is important.
The largest of common cockroaches, the American cockroach, is usually reddish-brown, with a bit of yellow on the region of the body behind the head. The body is also flattened and oval in shape.
The German cockroach is a generally smaller species of cockroach, with a body-color ranging from tan to almost black. It has two nearly parallel streaks on the backside of its head.
Oriental cockroaches, also known as black beetles, are larger cockroaches compared to other common species. They are dark brown to black and have a glossy body. The females have non-functional wings just below their heads. The males have long wings, which are brown, covering about two-thirds of their abdomens. Both sexes, despite their wings, are flightless.
Asian cockroaches are very similar to German roaches, besides a few structural differences. The fastest way to tell the difference between the two is that Asian cockroaches are good flyers and are attracted to light, like moths. They also prefer the outdoors, unlike German cockroaches, which prefer to be inside.
Dangers of Cockroaches
Cockroaches can become dangerous if not dealt with immediately. They can trigger allergies and asthma with their feces, shedding, and saliva. Cockroaches also contaminate foods and food surfaces with bacteria that they can deposit when they tread over them.
Preventing Cockroach Infestations
Knowing how to stop cockroaches from entering your home is essential. The best way you can keep them out is by sealing up any cracks or gaps in the structure. Cockroaches can fit through tiny spaces, so even the smallest crevice should be covered. You can stop them from being attracted to your house by cleaning up food messes immediately, keeping your yard free of clutter, and keeping it free of water sources. Using roach spray is not a good method of prevention. Not only is it very toxic, but it’s also messy and not 100% effective.
