An Oklahoma Traveler's Guide to Bed Bugs
December 13, 2019
This season is the season of traveling. Many people on the road in Oklahoma choose to stay in hotels, motels, and/or B&Bs. This convenient form of rest services brings with it the risk of bed bug infestations. No matter the quality of the place you are staying, be it a 5-star hotel or a small-town motel, no one can guarantee that bed bugs have not gotten in. It is important to be aware of your surroundings if you want to prevent bed bug bites and the possibility of bringing bed bugs home with you.
Checking for Bed Bugs
Knowing how to ensure that your room is bed bug-free is an important part of traveling. There are multiple actions that can be taken to check that there are no bed bugs that can bite you while you sleep. Consider the following tips:
Keep your luggage off the floor until you’ve completed your sweep of the room. Put luggage on the bathroom floor, inside the tub, or on high shelves or luggage stands while checking for bed bugs.
Check mattresses, etc. for bed bugs and signs of bed bugs. A good way to do this is to run a credit card, or even your room key, along seams of mattresses, cracks in furniture, and edges of carpets. Bed bugs look a little bit like an apple seed with legs. Signs of bed bugs include shed insect skins and red or brown spots on bedding.
Place all clothing that has been worn inside sealed plastic bags. Bed bugs are attracted to dirty laundry.
Continue to keep luggage up off the floor as much as possible.
If Bed Bugs are Found
The first thing you should do if you find bed bugs or evidence of bed bugs in your motel/hotel room is contact management to ask for a new room that is not adjacent, above, or below the infested room. If management is not willing to accommodate you, look for another place to stay.
Making Sure You’re Safe
Backpacks and suitcases are major bed bug carriers, with plenty of crevices for them to hide in. Even if you switched rooms, make sure to wash and dry all travel clothing at the highest possible temperature when you arrive home. There is also equipment that you can buy to steam your luggage to a temperature that will kill the bugs.
