What are ants?
Here in Oklahoma, we have a wide variety of ant species ranging from the small and painful red fire ant to the wood-destroying carpenter ant. Typically, ants are social insects that are usually found living outdoors in underground colonies which are comprised of at least one queen and thousands of workers. These workers ants are responsible for building these underground colonies and providing food for their queen and the rest of their colony. Ants are also notorious for ruining picnics and invading living areas.
Are ants dangerous?
All ants are dangerous to a certain degree, but depending on the exact species, some are more dangerous than others. For example, carpenter ants pose no direct threat to your health but they do pose a significant threat to the wood of your home. On the other side of the spectrum, you have the common, house-invading ants like pavement ants and odorous house ants that are considered nuisance pests and pose no danger to you, your family, or your home. Here in Oklahoma, there is only one ant species that you need to worry about regarding your health: the fire ant! These ants are known to be aggressive and their bites are very painful and can cause allergic reactions in certain individuals.
