Acrobat Ants

What Are Acrobat Ants?

Acrobat ants are a small species of ant that have several unique features that help to identify them. The unique ability to hold their abdomen up over the rest of their body is what has given these ants their name. They display this acrobatic behavior when they or their nest is disturbed. Other ways these ants are identified is by their heart-shaped abdomen or by the foul-smelling odor they emit when threatened. These small ants are usually yellowish-brown to black in color. Some are uniform in color while others are multi-colored.

Are Acrobat Ants Dangerous?

Acrobat ants are usually described as nuisance pests. However, if disturbed or threatened they may bite to defend themselves. In terms of physical safety from bites or stings, acrobat ants pose little threat to people. Still, it is important to keep these ants out of your yard and home. When infesting your home, acrobat ants are likely to contaminate food, spread bacteria. They may also strip insulation from wires causing short-circuits and risk of fires.

Why Do I Have An Acrobat Ant Problem?

Unfortunately, our yards provide ample places for acrobat ants to nest. They prefer to nest in the damp soil found under mulch and fallen trees, or next to foundations. As they move around your property foraging for food they often make their way inside of homes. These small ants find many ways to gain entrance to homes. Some of the more common entry points are near utility lines or cracks they find the foundation or exterior walls. Once inside your home they begin to create satellite nests to help expand their colony. Acrobat ants prefer to nest behind walls or under floors where there is moisture or fungal growth. While this means that they stay largely out of sight, don't take it to mean these ants are not causing problems inside your home.

Can I Eliminate Acrobat Ants Myself?

Once acrobat ants have chosen your yard or home to live or forage for food in, the best solution is to partner with Dandi Guaranty. Better still would be to prevent problems with acrobat ants in the first place. Be sure to eliminate sources of food, water, and potential shelter from your property. You can do this by keeping tight-fitting lids on trash cans, recycling bins, and compost bins. You will also want to remove tree stumps and fallen trees from your property. It is important to leave a barrier between moist soil or mulch and your home’s foundation. Another way to deter acrobat ants is by eliminating excess moisture in your home. Repair leaky pipes and use dehumidifiers to keep moisture levels low. Keep acrobat ants from gaining access inside your home by sealing cracks in the foundation and exterior walls. Don't forget to seal spaces around utility wires that are entering into your home and make use of door sweeps and screens.
